Poetry
FULL STOP CLOSE QUOTE
A white and sprawling
edifice
of silence,
clam tight and businesslike,
shadowed them
with fierce intention;
a monument to moods
that lacked invention,
subtlety, light –
hard lines,
square windows
(singularly framed)
looked out not in
on steady monotonies
of sin and carelessness,
whose common features
‘long-term, unredeeming,
learned off pat’
provoked no gestures
of forgivness –
in her or him;
some irregularity
was needed for that;
some shift
in shadow pattern –
some unexpected
breathless thing -
some passion -
some will –
some death
of something.
